We stood on the edge of the dock and watched the rainfall hit the waves: Amy Doran

We stood on the edge of the dock and watched the rainfall hit the waves. You would move slightly to adjust your hood, and I would shift my weight from one foot to the other, but aside from small movements, we were still.

I couldn't come up with anything to say, and you never were much of a talker. So I was surprised when you finally broke the silence.

"Do you think they'll come back?"

I blinked a few times and focused my eyes on one particular spot ahead of me where the raindrops were making a shifting pattern of concentric circles on the water, and realized I didn't know the answer.

"Maybe. It's hard to say."

You nodded slightly. Then you spoke again, surprising me again.

"That's gonna be the hardest part about this whole damn thing. Not them being gone. Us not knowing if they're gone or if they'll be back."

I looked at you after you said that, but you were still looking straight ahead at the water. I thought about some things I could say, like Maybe we'll find out one day what happened exactly, or We can't be sure of anything yet, but I thought better of it.

"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, it is."

We stood there a while longer, and then we got back into the car and drove back in from the shore.
